Church Minsters celebrate 120 years of preaching
Judith German presents long service certificates to Alan Thorn and Ernie Slarks
Ernie Slarks and Alan Thorn celebrated 70 years and 50 years of preaching
respectively at Sittingbourne Methodist Church on Sunday morning, May
27 th 2018.
They were joined in a packed church by friends from other local Methodist
churches, from Hartlip, Newington and Sheerness. Ernie Slarks, now 95, led
the service and gave a moving sermon based on “The greatest of these is
love”, a text he had first used whilst preaching during the Second World War,
a D-Day veteran Mr Slarks has been awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the
French government.
During the Service Judith German, secretary of The North Kent Methodist
Local Preachers’ Meeting presented both men with long service certificates.
Mr Ernie Slarks and Mr Alan Thorn thanked all present for their support.
The organ was played by Mr Brian Davies.
Afterwards the service festivities continued in the church hall with a
celebration lunch for which Rev Bill Prince led the Grace.
