Group 1 Subjects : Studies in language and literature
The IB recognises the major role of languages in the world and seeks to improve and extend international education and to promote international understanding . This begins with the study of one ’ s own language and the investigation of its literary culture .
It is also essential that all pupils should have at their command more than one language and that they should learn to think internationally . Learning a foreign language is a testing ground for tolerance , in that it will by its very nature teach new ways of thinking and of looking at the world .
CHINESE LANGUAGE A : LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE ( HL & SL )
This is a course for native speakers with previous experience of learning Chinese as first language . Any pupil interested in selecting Chinese Language A language and literature at HL or SL should also have had some previous formal literary experience and training .
Course aims : This course enables candidates to :
– Explore a range of texts from different periods , styles and genres .
– Develop the ability to engage in close , detailed analysis of individual texts and make relevant connections .
– Develop powers of expression , both in oral and written communication .
– Recognise the importance of the contexts in which texts are written and received .
– Develop an appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures , and how these perspectives construct meaning , through the study of texts .
– Appreciate the formal , stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts .
– Develop an enjoyment of , and lifelong interest in , language and literature .
Course content :
There are four literature works for standard level and six for high level .
The focus of the course is to explore the role of context in the construction of the meaning of a text .
Part 1 Language in cultural context Part 2 Language and mass communication
Part 3 Literature – texts and contexts ( SL : 2 works , HL : 3 works )
Part 4 Literature critical study ( SL : 2 works , HL : 3 works )
Course assessment :
HL and SL : All the IB courses are in the process of changing in terms of assessments . No official information will be available until end of February 2018 .
