COVER STORY Going beyond business: Introducing our new undergraduate curriculum We live in a fast-paced world, and it’s no secret that the way we do business is changing. Hult’s undergraduate curriculum has been redesigned to ensure that every student graduates with much more than just a fundamental knowledge of business. A growth mindset About the World About You The new undergraduate curriculum focuses on three pillars of study: World, future, and you. “Everyone agrees that the world is changing rapidly and we can’t prepare students for everything they will face during their careers. All we can do is prepare them to be ready with a growth mindset and the critical thinking skills to have the confidence to face those changes,” explains Jannicke Roos, Executive Vice President, Undergraduate Program. Business operates on a global scale. Whether you work for a large multinational or a small company, we’re all impacted by global trade and interconnected markets. The emphasis on personal development (the “you”) is a new concept—one that many undergraduates are very excited about. Students realize the importance of a global mindset and see their undergraduate experience as a time to connect and learn from different perspectives all around the world. They learn from each other just as much as they learn in the classroom, and it has been incredible to see young people so tuned into this mentality within the first week of their classes. Top down and bottom up The curriculum was redesigned in two very different, but ultimately complementary ways. Firstly, from the top down, linked to the school’s mission of becoming the world’s most relevant business school. Then from the bottom up, based on research the school conducted with Burning Glass Technologies, the leader in job matching and labor market analytical solutions for the education and workforce sectors. This collaboration allowed us to understand precisely what skills our students will need in the future. A panel of expert faculty then adapted many existing Hult courses, as well as creating entirely new ones across the three new pillars of study. 36 That said, the culture within businesses often remains distinctly local, as evidenced by some of the business mergers that have fallen apart primarily due to cultural differences. Hult students are prepared to understand these global forces, to be able to work in teams from very different cultural backgrounds, and to have the opportunity to gain international exposure by rotating across our campus network. About the Future The world is changing faster than ever, and new technologies are changing both the nature of jobs and how entire industries function. We want to help students embrace change and feel prepared for what the future holds. Our students will be exposed to the technologies that are generating big shifts in how industries are doing things. Whether it’s 3D printing and virtual reality disrupting the healthcare industry or artificial intelligence and machine learning changing trade patterns, students will have the opportunity to think critically about the risks and opportunities associated with these new technologies. Why is Hult different? Most business schools add knowledge but don’t necessarily transform the individual. Hult believes in education as transformation. We want our students to grow, becoming more confident, with both the skills and mindsets to deliver tangible results. We’ve made sure that our students learn to reflect on their own strengths and development areas, and that all our courses not only teach our students theory, but also have them practicing what they learn.
