FACULTY AND RESEARCH Learn to AIM Mindfulness isn’t magic, it is something that has to be practiced in order to be perfected. It can be cultivated through more awareness and consideration of your daily life. One of the key benefits of practicing mindfulness is improving what Chaskalson and Reitz label your AIM: Allowing, Inquiry, and Meta-awareness. These are three skills that are vital to leading a healthy, productive lifestyle. “The fact is that we are only aware of a tiny fraction of what we are thinking, feeling, and sensing—so we’re barely conscious of how and why we behave the way we do.” Megan Reitz and Michael Chaskalson Authors of Mind Time With just 10 minutes of mindfulness practice a day, you can improve your AIM and start being more aware of what’s going on in your mind. You don’t have to take our word for it: Make some time for your mind and give it a try! Inquiry Inquiry is being curious about what’s happening around you. This helps you stay engaged with the present. 18 Allowing Meta-awareness Allowing is all about having an open and accepting attitude towards yourself and others. Meta-awareness is the ability to observe your own thoughts, feelings, sensations, and impulses. Once you start observing yourself, you’ll have a better understanding of how you react and gain more control over how you respond.
