RoSPA AWARDS 2017 : OTTO SIMON LTD
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Otto Simon ensures that our workforce is involved in all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety , including the drawing up of risk assessments and method statements before a job is started . Site management teams use their experience , gained from up to 30 years working in challenging environments , to make sure that the job is designed and executed safely and efficiently .
Toolbox talks are carried out with the teams each week , to reinforce messages or highlight incidents that may be relevant to their work . Toolbox talks are also used to present new initiatives . For example , the teams were briefed on our plans for OHSAS 18001 .
Otto Simon ensures that all of our employees have health screening targeted at their specific role . This is reviewed annually to ensure our controls are effective .
Reviewing OH & S Performance Otto Simon assesses its OH & S performance in a number of ways , to evaluate progress toward the goal of zero incidents and to establish plans for continuous improvement .
The main means of reviewing occupational health and safety performance is through the Monthly Safety Meeting . The Safety Plan is reviewed at this meeting and any updates to the plan are made to ensure compliance .
A combination of the Monthly Safety Meeting and the Senior Management Meeting highlights incidents to the appropriate management level . Managers are held accountable for the occupational health and safety performance of their area of accountability .
Otto Simon maintains a central database for collecting data about all incidents . This allows continual monitoring and analysis , which in turn can identify trends or issues that need to be addressed .
We conduct regular audits and assessments at each location to measure the level of compliance with the Safety and Health Management System and standards . These audits identify gaps or systemic issues , and assist sites in addressing them . Audits and assessments identify successes and best practices that can be shared with other locations , and are a tool for continuous improvement .
Our corporate Combined Safety , Environment and Quality Policy , management system , standards , guidelines , and processes , are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they continue to reflect sound practices and meet the company ’ s high standards .
The annual Safety Plan monitors both leading and lagging indicators so that timely and appropriate actions are made .
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Like everyone , Otto Simon takes care to preserve the environments in which we operate . Our Combined HSEQ policy ensures that we prevent pollution , provide suitable controls for risks to health , safety and the environment arising from all of our operations , and comply with all relevant environmental , health and safety regulations .
What makes us unique is our desire to develop methods of life-cycle engineering . Otto Simon is currently working to establish links between technology providers that will encourage a circular economy within the waste-to-energy industry , by generating ‘ waste-to-feed ’ facilities ; where waste product from one process becomes a feed product for another .
STANDARDS Otto Simon is certified to ISO 9001 and this year , became certificated to OHSAS 18001 .
All of our engineering services are managed by third party approved quality management systems .

PROJECTS Otto Simon recently delivered several large-scale projects from commencement to commissioning with no lost time injuries .
Tasked with carrying out extensive structural and refractory repairs to Battery 3 of British Steel ’ s Appleby Coke Ovens at the Scunthorpe integrated Steelworks site , Otto Simon is proud of our achievement to deliver the project safely , and on time , despite the challenging working conditions .
The project took more than 250,000 man-hours to complete and was achieved whilst working between 2 live batteries with minimal disruption to normal operations ; which enabled continued production of coke for British Steel ’ s blast furnaces .
The work was carried out while the three remaining coke oven batteries were still being operated , and while taking into account the movement of large oven machinery on all faces of the oven battery . The working environment therefore involved a number of hazards , including : working at height ; working in close proximity to hot ( 900 ° C +) ovens ; moving oven machinery ; presence of flammable gases ; hot surfaces ; vibrating tools ; manual handling ; and lifting operations .
Otto Simon executed the work in a well-planned and carefully managed manner . Access controls were put in place , not only for company personnel carrying out the work , but for the client ’ s employees and sub-contractors who needed access to the work area . Otto Simon also
