CHRIS BRIDGLAND , MANAGING DIRECTOR
AWARDS Otto Simon is dedicated to embedding safety into our culture , and strives to work safely at all times .
Our RoSPA Silver Award success signifies our commitment to ensuring the continued health and safety of all our employees .
Along with our RoSPA Silver Award and certification to OHSAS 18001 , in the past twelve months , we have executed a number of challenging projects in difficult working environments , including a ‘ hot idle ’ of the Appleby Coke Ovens , and achieving 1 year Zero Harm on a Benzol Project .
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Health and Safety plays an important role in our core values and Otto Simon is proud to be a RoSPA Member . Our continual improvement plan for HSEQ ensures that all projects are delivered to the highest HSEQ standard .
We believe that all employees have a responsibility towards cultivating a safe working environment . We look to our Directors and Senior Management team to take an active role in leading the development and implementation of our Safety Plan and Safety Improvement Programme .
Otto Simon ’ s Senior Managers regularly undertake site safety audits and talk to teams on site , cascading safety information directly to everyone within the company , including sub-contractors .
Regular site tours involve the Work Teams , who discuss the work they ’ re currently undertaking and who listen to ideas or issues that the teams may have . This ensures a full understanding of the work being done .
Frequently , ideas for toolbox talks or safety briefings come out of general safety talks with people on the job , allowing us to address specific safety concerns with our workforce .
Measurable benefits are visible across Otto Simon ’ s recent projects , including the successful construction of a Benzol processing plant , and the delivery of a recovery and repair project for British Steel ’ s Appleby Coke Ovens .
The Benzol stripper and scrubbing plant was recently constructed with no time lost accidents over the 500-day project delivery programme . The project was constructed and integrated with the existing plant without interrupting ongoing operation .
The 6 month Appleby recovery and repair project involved a number of high hazard activities , including extensive work at height operations , working in proximity to operating machinery , and exposure to very high temperatures . With the exception of a minor first aid treatment , the job was carried out accident free .
The main benefit we ’ ve seen , however , is that our workforce feels confident in approaching supervisors and management to discuss issues or suggest ideas that might improve safety procedures and performance .
As part of the initiatives in place for 18001 , a
comprehensive safety improvement program has been implemented .
