FACILITIES & PROPERTY MANAGEMENT : ALEXANDRA
“ Other new developments , linked directly to Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ), include integrated fibres that can communicate with other devices such as proximity sensors , designed to alert you that you may be getting closer to a dangerous piece of machinery or vehicle .
“ Wearers can sometimes be suspicious of solutions that enable location tracking - the ‘ Big Brother ’ effect – but this is missing the point . If , for example , a GPS tracker shows a lone worker hasn ’ t moved for an excessive period of time , in the absence of a colleague to flag an incident , we want to know that the worker isn ’ t injured or distressed . Rather than using this technology to watch over employees , companies are looking at ways to increase employee welfare by ensuring they ’ re in a safe position .
“ As with any investment , a key factor in the implementation of new technology lies with cost - currently , there substantial differences in affordability with certain developments . For example , an augmented reality ( AR ) safety helmet comes at a significant premium when compared with a standard safety helmet that you can get from us and most other PPE providers for around the £ 10 mark . However , if you ’ re looking to upgrading workwear from a traditional high-vis garment at £ 25 to an integrated garment at around £ 70 , it ’ s a very feasible possibility .
“ There are excellent developments that are available now and more that will become available in the next 12 months . In terms of development within Alexandra , I could quite easily spend every day working on solutions of this nature . There are countless tech companies who have brilliant ideas but who need to integrate those ideas into the actual garments . These companies want to partner with Alexandra and our sister company Dimensions because we have the knowledge and capability to implement their ideas . We have to choose which suppliers and what solutions to work with to enable the most beneficial developments ; for us as a business and more importantly , for our customers .
“ As with all technological developments , solutions will evolve and refine over the next few years , both in terms of functionality and affordability .”
