The Five Forces
We are in the midst of a transformation to the Fourth Industrial
Revolution, and with it comes massive technology disruption,
productivity improvement, and exponential acceleration of the
design process. We are facing a major change to the way we work
that will drive exponential productivity gains and fundamentally
reshape our world. Here are five major forces behind the shift to
Industry 4.0.

ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE
Imagine taking a test drive in a rover
on Mars or stepping foot on a glacier in
Greenland to measure the rate of melt,
all without leaving the lab. Now imagine
a future where it’s possible for engineers,
designers, and constituents to become one
with the design of their latest innovation,
at the right scale, and in the appropriate
context, regardless of the actual physical
limitations. In the virtual world, we can
have realistic simulations, a team meet-
ing inside a nanomotor, train on virtual
machines or processes, or collaboratively
cycle through operating conditions.

5G & THE IoT
In a digital world filled with endless data that no
number of humans could ever possibly process,
AI has the ability to simultaneously learn and
self-replicate, enabling a theoretically unlimited
possibility of computing and interpreting data.
Conclusions defined by AI through testing of
real-world data can be applied to incremental or
hypothetical data, in effect simulating scenar-
ios that have not yet occurred in the real world.
This type of heavy lifting eliminates the need
for humans to define the test case and variables.
The net outcome is hyper iteration through the
design/test product development cycle, resulting
in generative, evolutionary, data-driven design.
