Community Voice A In this issue’s Community Voice, we sat down with winners of the HP Reinventor Awards. The internal awards serve as a way recognize the very best of HP innovations. Question: How are global trends shaping our future and impacting your job, and how you approach innovation and reinvention? Q 68 As a security researcher, the Megatrend that impacts how I approach security research is Accelerated Innovation. As we build more connected devices, especially cyber-physical sys- tems that include actuators, cyber attacks have an increasing power to potentially cause harm in the physical world. Staying ahead of these chal- lenges is a significant part of my research. M AU GA N VI LL ATE L Re se a rch Engin e e r Today’s global trends are the future we are living in, the jobs we are working, and the exact reason we are innovating and reinventing like no other. Our future is and will continue to become more technologically friendly. These technologies are enabling digital payment, online shopping, and wearables. I, as the next inventor, employee, and leader, will innovate and reinvent to service these trends. The future will encompass two approaches, one of which will fail. One, try to change and stagnant to the present ideas of “less” technology: or two, if you can’t beat it, join it. And with this, join it as a contributor. I think it’s very clear where we are trending regardless of what generation. These global trends are us. H E LLY TO R R E S O m e n S up e r viso r A global technology trend that is important to me is the move toward a circular economy that focuses on designing and building products in a way that uses fewer natural resources and enables the continued recovery and reuse of materials. A circular economy decouples busi- ness growth from a reliance on increasingly scarce raw materials, benefiting the environ- ment while advancing business success. This will continue to shape how I approach innovations such as the use of closed-loop recycled content in HP products, and achieve my personal mission to inspire, motivate, and enable people to lead more sustainable, healthy lives and run more sustainable businesses. JEAN GINGRAS S ustain a bilit y Pro gra m M a na g e r Two of the main focuses in today’s technology are manageability and security, but balancing the two can be tricky. There’s a direct correlation between how manageable something is and the number of possible attack vectors. So, there’s a huge incentive for things that identify and pro- tect against those attacks. My personal favorites are unit and automated testing. I think a quick and comprehensive test suite is vital to making sure no new issues are introduced as a project evolves, as well as exercising non-nominal cases. RO B E RT C R AI G Firmwa re Engin e e r The global technology trend that has had the most impact on my work is the replacement of physical interfaces with virtual interfaces. The abilities to communicate with my teammates, to ask questions, and to share ideas and documents from anywhere in the world, almost instanta- neously, allow me to continue innovating and developing through traditional barriers like nat- ural disasters and geolocation. By leveraging the technology trends of today, I am able to focus on the problems of the future and accelerate the pace of development and problem resolution. When you think about HP’s Megatrends work, sustainability clearly shows up. For example, the Rapid Urbanization that the world is facing will bring new constraints to our daily lives and has the potential to increase the demand for shared services like printing. As my team thinks about the future, we spend time focusing on the value that HP’s products and services currently deliver and how we could reinvent the impact they have to be more efficient, using fewer materials and less energy while driving social benefits to the communities where we manufacture them and where our customers use them.
