The Rise of Modern Conservatism in America, 1964 - 2017

This course will explore the historical backgrounds/principles of the conservative movement in the US and its impact on our nation. It will examine the challenges that conservatives faced in trying to enact their ideas (fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government) into public policy, and the repercussions of those struggles. We will explore conservatism's accomplishments and failures politically, as well as the cultural changes that have helped, hindered, and shaped its rise. In many ways, this class is a study in the transformation of American politics and in American culture over the last fifty-three years.
