LIGNANO SABBIADORO
At the very tip of the peninsula, has a lively
centre and an even more intense nightlife
and cultural live. The beaches are large
and well equipped.
PRECENICCO
On the right bank as you travel down-
stream of the Stella River, Precenicco is a
pretty town dating back to the time of the
Teutonic knights who were based here. It
is home to Houseboat.it’s base.
At the mouth of the Stella River on the left
is a magical village of fishing huts.
MARANO LAGUNARE
Is a picturesque fishing village less than
half an hour from Lignano Sabbiadoro,
whose history dates back to the Roman
age. Be sure to visit it, strolling the streets
and squares that bear witness to the time
of the Venetian Republic, which ruled
these lands from the 15th century to the
end of the 18th century.
PORTO BUSO
The islands of Anfora and Porto Buso are
more or less in the centre of the large Mar-
ano and Grado lagoon, and are connected
by a short breakwater topped by a pave-
ment. It is an isolated and peaceful spot
that comes to life on summer Sundays be-
cause of tourism. There are a couple of res-
taurants here and an unattended beach.
AQUILEIA
With its immense archaeological area and
the patriarchal Basilica, it is a precious jew-
el of art and history. Aquileia was one of
the largest and richest cities in the Roman
Empirein the Mediterranean, seat of a Pa-
triarchy until 1751, and centre promoting
Christianity throughout all of central Eu-
rope during the Middle Ages. In 1998, it
was named a UNESCO world heritage site.
GRADO
The town of Grado is an exclusive destina-
tion for beach tourists.
The central square of Grado has two
churches, not far from each other: the
Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, of Early Christian
origin with its orthogonal Baptistery and
the small church, the Basilica of Santa Ma-
ria delle Grazie
Santuario di Barbana is a gorgeous island
at the far eastern edge of the Grado la-
goon, home of an ancient Marian shrine,
built as thanks to the Madonna by the Pa-
triarch Elia after the year 582 when a vio-
lent storm threatened the town of Grado.
Shuttle service from Grado to Trieste, Eu-
rope’s cultural capital, home to important
monuments. The shuttle provides three
trips to the city each day, for visits and
shopping. Service available from June to
September.
