T his month we check into Jatujak Market at the heart of Bangkok. Jatujak, also known as J.J. Market is one of the world’s largest weekend markets, open from 06:00 to 18:00; it is a perfect way to spend your Saturday and Sunday. Getting there is easy: one can go to the BTS’s Mo Chit station or take the MRT. Getting lost in there is easy too: 27 acres of land combined with half a million visitors every weekend makes maps an indispensable amenity when strolling around. Some however, prefer to get lost, as the 15,000 stalls grant plenty of opportunities to lose your notion of time and inmerse yourself in the deepest of shopping sprees. There are so many booths in Jatujak that the general shopper’s rule is to buy something if you like it – if you choose to come back later; chances are you might never find the place again. The stands are varied in nature: one can find clothes and accessories at very reasonable prices. Shirts, trousers, dresses, shoes, earrings, necklaces… you name it and Jatujak has it. It’s tempting to walk in, be enamoured by the first shop you see and buy everything in it, only to realize it is sold in a number of booths at lower prices. Thus, it’s advisable to walk around first to get a general feeling of what is common and what you should purchase upon mere sight.
