Caring for Your Poinsettia Take your poinsettia home in a warm vehicle and unwrap plant shortly after arriving home. Keep your poinsettia where it will receive at least six hours of bright (not direct) sunlight. Do not place plant near open windows, doors or near heating vents. Keep the poinsettia in cooler temperatures (18ºC, 65ºF) to prolong the life of the bracts. If poinsettias are either too wet or too dry, they may lose leaves. Water when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch. Water enough to thoroughly moisten all the soil in the pot. Make sure excess water is drained out from the saucer or foil sleeve; never let the pot stand in water.
