Motivator on mark
AS EVER, the fabulous riches lavished
on the winner of the Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe decided the French champion
sire by progeny earnings. So the honour in
2013 fell to Treve’s sire Motivator.
The Derby-winning son of Montjeu
seems to have really clicked with French
racing and in the past year was also
represented by Prix Penelope winner
Ferevia and Prix du Jockey Club third
Sky Hunter. Motivator switched from the
Royal Studs to the Haras du Quesnay at
the beginning of the year. He covered 136
mares in his first year in Normandy – a
large book by French standards – and had
his fee more than doubled to €15,000
from €7,000 for 2014.
Monsun was another star of the French
racing season, providing nine stakes
winners including three at the highest level
– Prix Saint-Alary heroine Silasol, Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Novellist and
Prix d’Ispahan an d Prix du Moulin winner
Maxios. MS

NEW APPROACH sired three Royal
Ascot winners and champion juvenile
Dawn Approach in his first crop in
2012. The son of Galileo consolidated
that fantastic start in 2013 with Dawn
Approach going on to win the 2,000
Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes and
daughter Talent (below) landing another
Classic in the Oaks, writes Martin Stevens.
There are plenty of exciting prospects
in New Approach’s second crop too,
including Prix de Conde winner Elliptique
and easy conditions stakes scorer Sudden
Wonder.
Duke Of Marmalade supplied
the most winners and stakes
winners of any sophomore, while
Henrythenavigator achieved
the feat of siring Phoenix Stakes
winners in his first two crops
when Sudirman emulated his
paternal half-brother Pedro The
Great in the race in August.
