GOFFS NOVEMBER
Dispersals can be the making of a breedingstock sale and, in a heady hour of trading,
Goffs enjoyed one of the best auctions it
has ever seen when selling the top-quality
draft of Paul Makin’s Paulyn bloodstock.
The 29-year record price for a horse sold
in Ireland was shattered by this year’s Irish
Oaks heroine Chicquita when the hammer
finally fell at €6,000,000. The winning bid
was made by Peter and Ross Doyle, and
although the pair would not reveal who the
purchase was made for – it is believed for
Coolmore – they did confirm the daughter
of Montjeu, who has raced only four times,
will remain in training next season.
Two other mares from the Paulyn
dispersal brought seven-figure sums,
with Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick
International purchasing the Group 1
July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit, in foal to
Galileo, for €1,100,000. Song, a sister to
the outstanding Yesterday and the first mare
in foal to Frankel to be offered at auction
in Europe, was purchased for €1,000,000
by Friarstown Stud.
Among the other big-hitters was
Sparkle Plenty, a three-parts sister to Pour
Moi bought for €650,000, Authorized’s
dam Funsie, bought for €550,000, and
the Group 1 winner Gilt Edge Girl, also
purchased for €550,000.
Dundalk maiden, although she was placed
at Group 3 level, but she boasts a regal
pedigree, being a three-parts sister to such
top performers and producers as Yesterday,
All My Loving and Quarter Moon.
In all, the Paulyn dispersal grossed
€12,734,000 with 24 lots selling for an
average of €530,583.
However, it was not just the Makin horses
who contributed to a truly outstanding sale;
even without the Paulyn figures, turnover
for the breeding-stock section rose by a
staggering 60 per cent, and attractive lots such
as the Group winner Hazel Lavery, offered
in foal to Frankel and bought for €850,000,
helped make it an auction to remember.
The foal section of the sale was topped
by a half-brother to Irish 1,000 Guineas
winner Just The Judge. By first-crop sire
Rip Van Winkle, the colt was purchased
by David Redvers for €420,000.
Love And Pride, a close relation to
leading sire Bernardini, was snapped up
for $4.9m by Goncalo Torrealba’s Borges
Torrealba Holdings. Bred by Torrealba out
of a daughter of Bernardini’s dam Cara
Rafaela, Love And Pride has since won two
Grade 1s for Green Hills Farm Inc and was
offered in foal to Distorted Humor.
The one-day auction took place two days
after the Breeders’ Cup meeting and it was
