64 1 B R E E Z E-U P S A L E S Goffs Ready to Run at Kempton Seven months is a long time in racing. When the curtain fell on the 2013 Goffs Ready To Run Sale at Kempton on a freezing March afternoon the sale looked solid but unspectacular, with both the aggregate and clearance rate showing declines on 2012. Bids of £70,000 was all it took to top the sale, with the partnership of Stephen Hillen and Kevin Ryan twice offering that amount. In October, however, one of those colts, a son of first-crop sire Intense Focus consigned by Grove Stud, landed the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes as Astaire. The other, a Holy Roman Emperor colt named Sleeper King, also won, albeit a minor contest. The decline in aggregate can be excused by a slightly smaller catalogue than in 2012, but this sale continues to draw trainers and post good results on the racecourse. Craven record a sign of things to come New European high mark plus auction graduates continue to deliver the goods on the racecourse by Sophia Barnett Tattersalls Craven A record-breaking year for Tattersalls first hit the heights at the company’s premier breeze-up sale when a European record price of 760,000gns was set, eclipsing the previous mark of 625,000gns. Jamie McCalmont signed the ticket for the Lynn Lodge Stud-consigned son of Elusive Quality, a half-brother to the Group 2-placed Quarrel. A rare purchase of a Darley-bred by Coolmore, the colt was named Great White Eagle and went on to win the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes. A catalogue almost identical in size to 2012’s produced an increase in aggregate of nearly eight per cent to 9,235,000gns, while the average leapt by more than 22 per cent to 89,660gns. The median did not follow suit however, dropping by 8.3 per cent, while the clearance rate of just 66 per cent told its own story of a selective market. Great White Eagle wins the Round Tower Stakes and (inset) selling for 760,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Sale price to £30,401, a negligible decline on the previous year, but the sale also posted notable declines in both aggregate (15.3 per cent) and median (16.7 per cent). Last year’s record price of £300,000 could not be bettered, but a trio of six-figure lots led the way, headed by a Lawman filly consigned by Mocklershill and purchased for It was Sea The Stars who once again provided the ‘X factor’ at Arqana DBS A very satisfactory clearance rate of 81 per cent proved buyers at every level were in attendance at DBS, assisting the average £210,000 by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for Al Asayl Bloodstock Ltd. Named Minnaloushe, the filly has twice finished runner-up in all-weather maidens at two for John Gosden. A colt at the opposite end of the price scale proved the sale’s best performer, with Treaty Of Paris, a son of Haatef purchased for just £16,000 by trainer Henry Candy, landing the Group 3 Acomb Stakes. Tattersalls Guineas The Tattersalls Guineas breeze-up saw four lots bring six-figure sums in 2013, compared to just one in 2012, and the aggregate, for a slightly larger catalogue, gain more than nine per cent. Set against that, however, was both the average and median declined slightly. Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock bagged the sale-topper, going to 110,000gns for a Teofilo half-brother to Group 1 winner Caradak. The colt was a great pinhooking success for Adrian Costello’s Clenagh Castle Stud, which paid just €25,000 for the colt at Goffs the previous autumn. Once again, the best performer thus far from the sale emerged lower down the price range, with Hot Streak, bought by David Redvers for 42,000gns, landing the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes and finishing second to Astaire in the Middle Park Stakes.
