The son of Redoute’s Choice is also a brother to last year’s sale-topper, the filly Belle Couture who was purchased for A$2.6m. BC3 Thoroughbreds was responsible for the purchase of both lots, with Adam Sangster the underbidder on the 2013 sale-topper. The colt was the third Inglis sale-topper out of the Desert Sun mare Helsinge following the subsequent Group 1 winner All Too Hard, by Casino Prince, who was purchased for A$1,025,000 in 2011. But by mid-November the yearling’s life hung in the balance after he developed laminitis following a spider bite while in his paddock. The previous record of A$3m, which had stood since 2007, was also surpassed by a Fastnet Rock colt purchased by Emirates Park for A$4m. The nine seven-figure lots all helped boost returns significantly, with aggregate for the three-day Session 1 rising by 16 per cent, the average by a near-32 per cent and the median by 25 per cent. Fastnet Rock was responsible for the highest price of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with Coolmore going to A$1.35m for a colt out of a sister to multiple Group 1 winner Super Elegant. The dispersal of mining magnate Nathan Tinkler’s bloodstock lit up the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in May, with Coolmore once again topping proceedings with the progeny of Fastnet Rock. On this occasion the operation went to A$1.55m to secure the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes heroine Nechita. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum purchased the sale’s other seven-figure lot, paying A$1.05m for the regally bred Sadler’s Wells mare Endless, an unraced sister to Powerscourt and a half-sister to Frankel’s dam Kind. A Manduro yearling out of the same mare sold for A$500,000 during the National Yearling Sale but was reportedly bought back by Tinkler. NEW ZEALAND Demand for progeny of Fastnet Rock was sky-high on both sides of the Tasman in 2013, with Tom Magnier topping t h e N Z B Pre m i e r Ye a r l i n g Sale at Karaka when paying NZ$1,975,000 for a colt by the southern hemisphere super sire. That price was NZ$225,000 more than last year’s high mark, also for a Fastnet Rock yearling, after 5
