One whom the newly crowned Cartier
queen never met – a showdown that could
have topped the season – was Germany’s
leading light Novellist. Unbeaten since
September 2012, the son of Monsun, who
sired five individual Group 1 winners this
year, extended that run with three further
top-flight wins. The most impressive of these,
which made it all the more disappointing
when a fever forced his 11th-hour withdrawal
from the Arc, was a record-breaking
five-length obliteration of a classy King
George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes field.
The older brigade were also more
than ably represented by the magnificent
Moonlight Cloud and the year’s sprinting
sensation Lethal Force, but no review would

the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood,
breathing problems blighted the son of High
Chaparral at various points in his season,
including when fourth in the 2,000 Guineas.
At that point, on a blustery, rain-ravaged
Rowley Mile in May, Dawn Approach was
unbeaten, returning to the scene of his
Dewhurst victory to become the first of two
Classic winners for his sire New Approach,
followed by victory in the Oaks for the
Ralph Beckett-trained filly Talent.
However, the Derby was to prove Dawn
Approach’s undoing. After being set alight
in the early stages, the weeks of debating
whether or not Jim Bolger’s colt would – or
could – stay the trip were answered as he
finished a tailed-off last.
Thirty three lengths ahead, Aidan
O’Brien’s Ruler Of The World crossed
the line triumphant, becoming a 6V6
