PARENTING TIP
Newborn to Six Months:
Stop Comparison
by Cynthia Wilson James
I
f the pediatrician says your baby is healthy
during the well-baby care checkups, resist
the urge to compare your baby’s devel-
opment with another baby of the same
age. Your girlfriend, sister or cousin may
have said her 6-month-old baby’s singing
“If You’re Happy and You Know It.” You
shouldn’t panic because your baby isn’t
doing this. Most babies aren’t singing “If
You’re Happy and You Know It” at six
months— except in the ears and minds of
their loving mommies.
According to research, it is natural
for babies to reach some milestones earlier
or later than others. Always address any
concerns, regardless of how big or small,
related to development with your baby’s
pediatrician. Meanwhile, resist the urge to
compare your baby with another. This will
save you a lot of stress. God gave you the
gift of being a mother to your little angel—
enjoy it!
