Eating nutritious and wholesome food at the bustling ABsTraCt cafe in the heart of Bella Vista is an experience in itself. The decor is quirky, the atmosphere friendly and when you see the bright crocheted blankets thrown around, you know you are in for cosy dining. Xenia and Guy Fisher own the cafe and are passionate about providing the local community with good food. Ninety per cent of their products are made on site and most are made from scratch. They are also responsible product buyers. “We strive to purchase from honourable growers and farmers and use these ingredients to create amazing flavours; the success of food is all about its flavours,” Xenia tells me, over perfectly-made steaming lattes. ABsTraCt’s menu is simple to get around; vegan, gluten free and dairy free items are clearly marked which saves diners continually asking the pleasant staff, Cori and Grace, what ingredients are in each dish. Some popular signature dishes are standard menu items. These include the light paratha (thin Indian flat bread) wraps packed with tasty fillings and the all day breakfast. However, Guy and Xenia like to keep things fresh by changing the monthly specials. Specials for June are a thick, hearty potato and chorizo soup; a rich, organic tomato-based pasta dish and a tasty trio of pork sliders. The sliders are generously filled with succulent pork and apple aioli; pork and spicy tomato chutney; and pork with beetroot and aioli relish. Each bun has a unique taste as Guy makes his own aioli, marinades and sauces. Xenia bakes all the cakes using unbleached flour and sugar that is process-free. She also makes her own almond meal, almond milk and chocolate. The large glass cabinet houses a good choice of vegan treats, protein balls and delicious desserts such as choc chunk brownies, raspberry blond bites and ginger and cashew slice. On our recent visit we sampled a hefty slice of apple cinnamon crumble which was delicious, a generous layer of apple running through the middle of a not too sweet cake, with a grainy crunchy top. ABsTraCt is really popular with the Monday to Friday local workforce but is also open for breakfast on Saturdays. Drop in and try a paratha brekkie wrap or poached eggs, feta and avocado on sourdough. Relax and enjoy with a loose leaf tea organically grown in India or a golden latte with homemade almond milk, turmeric and cinnamon. A great start to the weekend.
