Hills District Independent JUNE 2017 #24 - Page 3

From the editor’s desK I was chatting to one of our readers the other day, discussing the content of the magazine and what makes it a cover to cover read for her. She hit the nail on the head when she said, “I just love reading about all these ordinary people that do extraordinary things.” The process of putting a magazine together can be tenuous and stressful, but I must say it’s the content and meeting these incredible people that help our team keep it real and certainly keep things in perspective. Our June issue is overflowing with local fundraising projects and articles on locals who quietly go about their business making life better for other people any way they can. Look at Hills Relay For Life, now a strong, community event with the event raising over $260,000 for cancer research, support services and awareness campaigns this year. Read about Glenhaven’s Brian Hoare who has taken part in 27 Variety bashes raising money for Variety, the Children’s Charity. And then there is Anna Papoutsakis from Glenhaven Rotary – after visiting an orphanage in Vietnam and hearing of two young boys who sadly passed away from mumps, Anna quickly implemented a vaccination program for the other 60 children in the orphanage. Then there is Rob Pirina At Glenorie Bakery. His team have been raising funds for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for several years as part of their Pie of Origin fundraising event. This year, the event holds a deeper meaning for Rob after his nephew, Charlie passed away recently. We also meet Allira Fontana, a Kenthurst photographer and animal lover who volunteers her time to save dogs from the pound and find them forever homes, raising funds through a beautiful photographic project. These are people that pass you in the street. You wouldn’t think twice about them or what they do. Yet, they are remarkable. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
