-Beaujolais- T he Beaujolais region is a series of elegant rolling hills. The scale of the peaks & depths of the valleys create a landscape of great panoramas and rich contrasts. In the south lay the mountains of the Mont Lyonnais, where vines are re- placed by meadows and fruit trees. Far from the tourist trails, these hills form some of the most stunning countryside in the area, explored on Lyons’s Beautiful Secluded Hills. Further north is the “Golden Stones” re- gion, so called due to the colour of the limestone used in its historic build- ings. Here you’ll find some of the prettiest villages in France. Often referred to as the local Tuscany, it’s covered by our Medieval Village Tours and visited on our Chateaux & Medieval Villages wine trail as well as our Beautiful Beaujolais Trail, which is featured to the right. Beaujolais is of course most famous for its vibrant fruity red wines made from Gamay Noir grapes and divided into 12 appellations. The South has gentler hills where limestone produces younger and lighter wines, whilst to the north, granite slopes produce fuller bodied wines designated as 10 grand crus. You’ll get to sample these wines at your guest houses on our two Beaujolais wine trails which cross the area: In the south our Beaujolais Wine Trail: Chateaux & Medieval Villages and in the north: Beaujolais Wine Trail: Grand Crus. Away from the vines, broad summits of the High Beaujolais are carpeted in woodland and between the woodland you get spectacular views over the vine covered slopes. This upland area with farms and hamlets little changed in centuries is explored with a circular trail High Beaujolais Hills. Beautiful Beaujolais Trail This unique holiday explores the full range of Beaujolais landscapes by traversing from north to south over 6 varied day’s walking, taking in remote hills, secluded vine- covered valleys and pretty golden- stone villages - see page 22. In the south, much of Burgundy’s architecture is influenced by the small town of Cluny. During the late Medieval period Cluny was home to the largest abbey in Europe, & its influence is evident in the churches and priories across the region. Cluny is central to 3 of our walking holidays. Secret Burgundy: Chardonnay Vines & Historic Villages explores a varied landscape to the south of Cluny with rocky outcrops encircled by vines, pretty villages and higher rugged hills. To the north of Cluny is Medieval Burgundy: the Monk’s Trail, which passes through a gentler landscape peppered with historic villages and chateaux. This holiday also explores another architectural gem, Tournus Abbey. Keeping closer to the Saone Valley is the Chardonnay Wine Trail, which starts in the actual village of Chardonnay itself and follows the vineyards south through picturesque Burgundy countryside and historic villages such as Brancion, Cormatin, & Berzé with wonderful chateaux & churches. Our Medieval Burgundy Explorer covers all the above facets of Burgundy. We also have holidays in two other areas in the Burgundy, the Brionnais (see to the right) and the Cote d’Or. Some of the most famous wines in the world are now grown in the Cote d’Or. Our Classic Burgundy Trail heads south from historic Dijon and Beaune through varied rolling coun- tryside, heading into areas rarely visited by other companies.
