Kathy Biggar (Baker) generously funded this publication. She worked in prisons for more than 20 years and, among many other things, was responsible for the introduction of Samaritan-trained Listeners across the estate. Shortly before she died in 2018, this is what Kathy had to say… Prison Officers have no idea how good they are. They often say ‘we’re just doing our jobs’. But the truth is they do extraordinary jobs, extraordinarily well – and it’s a job most people can’t and don’t want to do. Often unseen and unheralded because they operate, literally, behind closed doors, they protect the public and change people’s lives. And they do so with good humour, dedication and compassion. They deserve our respect, admiration and thanks. If anyone merits the term ‘Hidden Heroes’, it’s them.
