S E I T E I C O S USQ CLUBS & g n i d a e l r e e h C Club What do outer space solar winds and cheerleading have in common? Well, as it turns out, the answer is not much at all … but that doesn’t stop USQ PhD student Belinda Nicholson from being passionate about both. Belinda moved from Melbourne to Toowoomba to commence her PhD in Astronomy at USQ. Upon finding that there was no active cheerleading club on-campus, she made it her goal to create one. Once she had set her goal, it didn’t take her long to achieve it. In just a few months, Belinda has gathered a team of students and has already started training. ‘It’s so much fun! It’s positive, has a great vibe, you form really strong bonds with your team, your fitness is incredible, it’s fast-paced and you learn new skills.’ Having both credentials and international cheer experience, Belinda has set her sights on the Australian University Games and the State Championships to get her team off the ground (pun intended). The USQ Phoenix Cheerleading Club is now open for new members, with no prior cheer experience required. It’s an inclusive sport, people come from various backgrounds including dance and gymnastics or are general sporting enthusiasts. ‘Most of our club members learn to cheer at the training sessions.’ So, if you love jumping, flipping, or just generally hate touching the ground, make sure to contact the USQ Phoenix Cheerleading Club via Facebook or email at [email protected].
