Brisbane's rock heroes return with their all-familiar sound in an
album that sounds like their most comfortable one to date.
To me, the third Violent Soho album,
Waco, much like its predecessors,
encapsulates the thoughts and ideals
of an Australian generation of youthful
dreamers. The song lyrics are cleverly
written in a way that so each song’s
message can be interpreted differently
by different listeners. While listening, I
often felt like I had passive, forgotten
thoughts plucked from my mind.
‘Evergreen’ soars through before the
album gradually comes to a halt with
album closer ‘Low’. There is enough
variety here to please most, if not
all fans. Being what sounds like their
most comfortable to date means there
is no lack of grungy guitar riffs and
layered leads with angst ridden vocals,
accompanied by a rhythm section to be
reckoned with.
The album rolls through at a consistent
pace, from album opener ‘How To
Taste’ with its really interesting pedalladen intro and outro, through to ‘So
Sentimental’ before slowing down for a
brief moment during ‘Like Soda’, before
kicking it back into gear. Eighth track
After listening to the album multiple
times, mostly while driving between
Toowoomba and Brisbane which
provided a great backdrop, the album
still holds my attention. That said, for
their next release I personally would
like to hear further experimentation.
While it’s great to listen to a band
that is comfortable with where they
are, I would hate to see them parody
themselves. After briefly seeing them at
this year’s Laneway Festival, I can’t wait
to see what new songs are added to
their live set on their sold out tour.
