music I moved house recently and during the pain-staking task of boxing up my life, I came across a shirt I used to love that had been lost to me for about four years. Once the highlight of my wardrobe, I’d remembered it fondly but come to terms with the fact that it would never again grace the hangers of my closet. Pulling it from the depths of my drawers was like uncovering it on the rack at Sportsgirl all over again. I felt joy, amazement and a sudden urge to wear it everywhere, all at once. The first time I heard Adele’s new single was the musical equivalent to my shirt re-discovery. Lost to my life for a similar amount of time, hearing a brand new Adele ballad on the radio made me realise just how much I’d missed her and my love for her heartbreaking lyrics came flooding back. I was a woman possessed. After resigning myself to the fact that her previous albums (19 and 21) would have to tide me over for any future heartaches and solo road trips, Adele burst back into my life with the same spine-tingling vocals that had her on repeat on my iPod all those years ago. Naturally, I had the lyrics down pat that same day and have been belting them out like a karaoke star ever since. While I’m not in any position to provide a review of the full album (it’s released later this month), what I can tell you is that her first single, ‘Hello’, is everything a true Adele fan has been waiting for and the very thing a non-believer needs to be converted. Honest, heartfelt and soulful to the core, it’s the type of song that’ll have you reminiscing about a stranger you made eye contact with years ago. It’s jus BF
