Treasures of the Toowoomba region 2013

Message from the Mayor

Toowoomba Regional Council is proud to present Heritage Treasures of the Toowoomba Region 2013 . This latest booklet complements the 2008 Toowoomba ’ s Heritage Treasures publication which has been widely circulated and enjoyed in Toowoomba and beyond .
This edition brings together heritage treasures from right across the Toowoomba Regional Council area . This permanent record of our hidden history provides a wonderful insight into the richness and diversity of the heritage sites that have helped to shape this region ’ s identity .
As a community , we must work hard at preserving our heritage and recognising today ’ s cultural items for reference into the future . Therefore , I congratulate those from the region ’ s Heritage Advisory Committee who have been instrumental in bringing together Heritage Treasures of the Toowoomba Region 2013 . I also thank Emeritus Professor Maurice French AM , who wrote the history of these latest treasures , as well as all of those from this community who nominated places or objects for consideration .
I trust you ’ ll enjoy gaining a greater appreciation of the valuable heritage and character within our region .
Paul Antonio Mayor , Toowoomba Regional Council

A Word From the National Trust of Queensland

Toowoomba Regional Council is to be congratulated on producing this booklet . It is a tangible example of what the Toowoomba Regional community values about its past . This booklet carries many benefits for the city and region as well as for Queensland as a whole . It creates greater awareness of the Toowoomba Region ’ s history and heritage and will foster a stronger sense of community pride . I ’ m sure it will provide another means to promote the Toowoomba Region to a wider audience .
As a member of the 2008 selection panel , I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the stories from the ‘ locals ’ and reviewing the nominations . I was very impressed by the quantity and diversity of the submissions from the community – it certainly shows there are many people in the Toowoomba Region who treasure their local character and identity .
This initiative adds to the many actions carried out by the previous Toowoomba City Council to promote heritage and educate the community .
Well done !!
