A major draw for visitors to the region of Herault is the multiple beach and fishing villages that dot the coast of the country on the Balearic Sea. Palavas-les-Flots, just outside of Montpellier, makes a picturesque stop with its canals and many bars and restaurants. Cap d’Agde is the place for vacationers seeking a resort atmosphere. Golf, beaches and shopping are the main attraction to this popular area. Cap d’Agde is also known as a naturist destination with a large section of nudist beaches.

Étang De Thau is Herault’s largest and one of many lagoons that is separated from the Balearic Sea by a strip of sand. This lagoon takes up a large portion of the coast and has many interesting villages worthy of a visit. One of the largest and most popular villages along the coast is Sète, known as the best port for fishing along Étang De Thau’s coastline. Locals know Sète as the Venice of Languedoc because of the canals and bridges that wind through this part of the city. Along the canals, travelers can find many restaurants, shops and beaches on the water. Mèze offers tourists a less crowded option and a historic old town to explore. Known as the oyster capital, Mèze’s harbor is its main attraction and its old town includes cathedrals for architecture buffs and a paleontology center.
