Jardin des Plantes, Montpellier’s Botannical Garden, located to the north of Place du Peyrou, is France’s oldest garden of this type. Originally created in 1593, the garden contains a wide variety of plants, flowers and a greenhouse (Languedoc-Roussillon).

Montpellier offers a variety of historical sights for a wide range of interests. The Arc de Triomphe, much like the monument of the same name in Paris, is at the center of Montpellier’s major thoroughfare. Montpellier’s Arc de Triomphe was built in 1689 and is the focal point of the Place de Peyrou, the city’s upscale promenade. Vieille Ville, a neighborhood located across from the Place de Peyrou, is filled with quaint restaurants and shops. The Cathedrale St-Pierre, located in Vieille Ville, was originally completed in the 14th century and later reconstructed in the 18th century. Next to the Cathedrale St-Pierre is the Faculté de Médecine, Europe’s oldest medical university. Visitors can take a walking tour through the university that includes a visit to the Museum of Anatomy, Europe’s largest museum of this type.
