erault’s largest city, Montpellier, offers a variety of attractions as well as interesting neighborhoods to explore. Home to a diverse population, Montpellier was originally founded in the 10th century as a large

trading port. The city is one of few in France without a Roman influence. Instead, the city boasts a multicultural background and is home to many immigrants from Spain, Morocco and Arabic nations. Adding to this diverse population are the students who attend the city’s six universities, including Europe’s oldest medical school at the Université de Montpellier. Located at the southeastern corner of Herault and home to an international airport, Montpellier makes a good starting point for a tour around the department of Herault.
