Northern Herault is also known for picturesque villages filled with cobblestone streets surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert is considered one of France’s most beautiful villages. Surrounded by cliffs and gorges, the village is a remote and scenic location for those seeking some quiet. Established more than 1,000 years ago, Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert sights include a prison and the Gellone Abbey, dating back to the 12th century. The village has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage sights. Saint-Martin-de-Londres was once a military base with a medieval lookout tower located in the main square. The main attraction of Saint-Martin-de-Londres is its Romanesque church erected in the 12th century. The building has an unusual clover leaf shape, which is the only one of its kind in France.
