Cirque de Mourèze
Northern Herault is best known for its natural scenic beauty as well as picturesque historic villages. Lunas, one of the largest villages in the northern section of Herault, is the beginning of the area known as Pays des Monts et Sources (land of mountains and springs). Offering a quiet getaway from the bustle of Montpellier, Lunas is a river town, with beautiful old houses lining the riverfront. The Chateux de Lunas, rebuilt in 1641 after being burned down, houses a restaurant where tourists can dine and enjoy a river view. Avène is a spa town known for its healing waters and beauty products. Avène Spa, located just outside the village, provides a variety of skin treatments as well as therapeutic baths. The village of Mourèze offers a view of the Cirque de Mourèze, an impressive natural amphitheater created by dolomites, upright rocks remaining after surrounding rocks have been worn away due to erosion.
