TAKING
THE STAGE
When my family first watched SHREK the Musical, we were all equally amazed at the amount of talent that each character held. One of my favorite characters, Teen Fiona, is played by the quirky and fun Marissa O’Donnell. At a very young age, Marissa has the opportunity to participate in a myriad of performances, including the film Peace, Love and Misunderstanding and the beloved musical Annie. She has also performed on a variety of national television shows, including Good Morning America and the Today Show. I recently had the opportunity to interview this amazing young woman. Read on to hear more about the iconic and successful Marissa O’Donnell!
Q: What made you initially interested in musical theater? How did you begin your career as a performer?
A: I always loved to sing and was dancing from a young age. When I was seven I saw a poster for PETER PAN at my community theater and asked my mom if it was possible for me to be in the show. I auditioned but did not get cast. I was disappointed but was determined to get into their next show. The following year I was cast as one of the royal children in THE KING & I. Backstage I told my mom, "This is what I want to do with my life."
Q: Since Her Culture is primarily a magazine about embracing your culture, what is your cultural identity? How has it shaped you into the person you are today?
A: I have always been interested in and proud of my Irish heritage. My family is predominantly Irish. I grew up listening to Irish music, and enjoyed the stories about Irish ancestors my grandparents loved to tell over and over again. The Irish are known for their storytelling in literature and through music. I like to think of musical theater as an extension of that. I enjoy the challenge of creating a character and moving an audience through words and music.
