Household food is an incredibly finite resource and many rely on charitable sources such as food banks to survive . Environmental Science teacher Jennifer Muirhead decided to combine learning and community
service by having her students grow food for the 6Stones food bank .
“ We help plant and grow the crops , then after we harvest the crops we give them to the less fortunate ,” senior Dylan Birdsong said .
This “ Tilling Tuesday ” class activity helps fulfill the class ’ curriculum goals by applying what students have learned in the course .
“ The students get to use the content they have studied in a real world setting , for example : seasonal changes and vegetation correlation ,” Muirhead said .
Growing food for consumption also teaches the challenges and importance of environmental conservation .
“ It gives students a helpful outlook for the future of the environment ,” senior Hussain Ali said . “ This motivates the students to help with environmental conservation .”
