include arthritis, muscle injuries, broken
bones, etc.
Other diseases besides cancer can cause
changes in appetite, unintended weight loss,
coughing, lethargy and limping, but only
your veterinarian can accurately determine
the cause of these symptoms. If your pet
is showing any of these signs, take them to
your veterinarian right away.
Cancer Treatment
for Pets
There are various treatment options for
cancer. To find out the best way to treat a
cancer, usually biopsies are necessary to
determine what kind of cancer your pet has.
Also, when your pet is diagnosed with cancer, they will be “staged.” Staging is a process
that involves performing baseline blood
work, including looking at red and white
blood cells and liver and kidney values; taking X-rays of the chest and abdomen; and
performing an abdominal ultrasound. This
information will tell if the cancer has spread
to different places in the body, which may
influence the treatment protocol. Some cancers can be cured surgically by completely
removing the mass. Other cancers, especially
ones that have spread, may benefit from
treatment options such as chemotherapy or
radiation therapy. Dogs usually tolerate chemotherapy very well. We don’t usually see
many side effects from chemotherapy, and it
often improves their symptoms and quality
of life as well as their prognosis, depending
on the type of cancer your pet has. Radiation
therapy can also be used for cancer treatment. We can use radiation to make tumors
For this reason, all the staff at
Village Animal Hospital have a
common bond: a daily goal to

it after surgery to help prevent recurrence of
