S. today. It is a rapidly growing problem that can affect children as young as one year of age. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) believes this early tooth decay can have a lasting negative impact on the oral health, as well as, the overall well-being of children affected. Experts say the reason tooth decay is increasing so rapidly in such young children is because of the types of foods they are consuming and how often they are consuming them. Children are eating more processed carbohydrates like goldfish and pretzels, along with more sugary drinks, than they ever have before. Once eaten, these simple sugars surround every nook and cranny of the teeth. The bacterium inside the mouth then gobbles up the sugars, leaving a trail of acid behind. This acid will eat away at a tooth’s protective layers, compromising its structure. With these issues in mind, parents of today’s young children must be proactive about taking care of their little one’s teeth. Dr. Morgan Dillow, a pediatric dentist at Pediatric Dentistry of Hamburg, states that “cavities are almost 100 percent preventable.” “The key,” he says, “is early prevention.” child goes on a regular basis to the same dental office, he or she will start to feel at home there, and, hopefully, at ease.
