Opening of Regional Cancer Center 1989 Esker added, “Not having healthcare close to home can be burdensome to people and result in them getting sicker. Transportation is a problem for many elderly and low-income individuals. Not having a consistent provider interferes with people getting the help they need, and this increases costs for all, since people often use emergency rooms for primary care. What’s ahead? “We will continue to put emphasis on growth, by expanding our services and our geographic reach. That’s our ‘hedge’ against whatever comes from Washington,” Esker said. “Our nation is in a time of transition in terms of how it pays for healthcare. The challenges are to stay ahead of the legislation and to be flexible and adaptable; our independence allows us to do that.” “During my time in this role, I have gained an appreciation for the time and energy that our board of directors gives us. It’s a volunteer board, and they really want us to do well. They need to be recognized for their commitment and leadership,” Esker added. “Sarah Bush Lincoln is in a good spot. We really are. I feel grateful and fortunate that we’re well positioned for this change.” Child being “wheeled” into surgery Information Systems 1990 may 2017 healthstyles 7
