Esker added, “Not having healthcare close to home can
be burdensome to people and result in them getting sicker.
Transportation is a problem for many elderly and low-income
individuals. Not having a consistent provider interferes with
people getting the help they need, and this increases costs for all,
since people often use emergency rooms for primary care. Having
clinics in rural communities provides greater access to care. Since
the 1990s, Sarah Bush Lincoln has opened clinics in 13 distinct
communities, which means people have dedicated physicians and
convenient access to ancillary services. Employing primary care
physicians and specialists makes it easier to recruit additional
specialists, because this becomes a more attractive place to practice.
Being committed to the employed physician model has allowed us to
recruit, and that has changed the delivery of medical services here in
East Central Illinois.”

Sarah Bush Lincoln has made tremendous investments in
infrastructure and technology over the years to ensure that we
stay on the leading edge of care. Our physicians have trained at the
same medical schools and hospitals that “big city” doctors have
trained at, so we are competitive in that way too. What’s ahead?
“We will continue to put emphasis on growth, by expanding our
services and our geographic reach. That’s our ‘hedge’ against
whatever comes from Washington,” Esker said. “Our nation is
in a time of transition in terms of how it pays for healthcare. The
challenges are to stay ahead of the legislation and to be flexible and
adaptable; our independence allows us to do that.”
“During my time in this role, I have gained an appreciation for
the time and energy that our board of directors gives us. It’s a
volunteer board, and they really want us to do well. They need to
be recognized for their commitment and leadership,” Esker added.
“Sarah Bush Lincoln is in a good spot. We really are. I feel grateful
and fortunate that we’re well positioned for this change.”
