On behalf of the Cambridge Boat Club , the 2010 Race Committee , Race Operations Group and my staff , I welcome you back to the Head Of The Charles Regatta . In this my twentieth season at the helm of the Regatta , I continue to marvel at the talent and commitment shown by those who contribute so generously to the traditions of the past and the innovations for the future of our Fall Rowing Festival .
A year ago , I wrote in this column that the “ financial journey ” to provide the necessary funding for this event was indeed challenging . EMC , the international data storage giant , was a heroic last minute sponsor whose participation changed the outcome of our year . Still , 2009 was a delicate budgetary balancing act in a drought-stricken sponsorship environment . Expecting a similar experience this year , in what some economists have dubbed the “ worst economic downturn since the Great Depression ” I was prepared for a long season of corporate rejections .
Imagine my surprise when brands such as EMC , Brooks Brothers , Lincoln , and Delta Air Lines made commitments to support us this year . With considerable gratitude we all thank these financial pillars supporting the Head Of The Charles .
EMC will have a strong presence this year at both the Weld Boathouse area and the Rowing and Fitness Expo , engaging interested parties in discussions about work opportunities with their global brand . Brooks Brothers , our proud new Official Apparel Sponsor , will construct two retail shops along the river and sell co-branded clothing that will surely be a hit with all attendees . Watch for our many volunteers on site wearing the jacket custom-designed by Brooks and the HOCR staff .
This year , Delta Air Lines will present the Eliot Bridge Enclosure , located directly upstream of the Eliot Bridge . This upscale , semi-private tent offers alumni , parents , rowers , and friends a place to sit and dine during the Regatta weekend . Thank you , Delta , for helping us put together many great amenities for this unique location .
Lincoln , Ford ’ s luxury automotive division , will join us for the first time as our Official Automobile . Touting their new MK line of vehicles , look for stylish cars parked along the river at key locations and be sure to stop by and check out their new models for future consideration . Keep an eye out for one lucky Directors ’ Challenge entry taking their trip down the river as winners of the Lincoln Test Drive promotion .
Returning also in 2010 will be Tretorn Footwear . A division of PUMA , Treton will be set up at Weld marketing area as well as the Rowing and Fitness Expo . Look for their colorful rubber
