Several boats behind the Crawfords , wearing orange , and sporting bow number 17 , was the mother-son team of Kristen Erikson and William Erickson Bass from Connecticut . William was , at 11-years-old , the youngest rower in the field , but he had been sculling since the age of eight . The two attended the Craftsbury Sculling Center the previous summer and completed the informal Head of the Hosmer at camp ’ s end . They were dedicating their efforts that day to William ’ s father , Jonathan , who died of brain cancer in 2007 — the same HOCR weekend that wife Kristen was competing in a single .
