FIFTH ANNUAL HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA

Charles River Massachusetts Course Distance 21 / 3 miles upstream
The Annual Head of the charles Regatta sponsored by the cambridge Boat club is patterned after the many English Head of The River races These make use of tortuous course which not only puts the
coxswains steering to test but allows greater distances to challenge the oarsmens endurance By eliminating the need for qualifying races head
races also allow many more boats to compete in given amount of time
Although the contestants are rowing against time spectators are wit ness to keen competition between boats which take running starts only
10 seconds apart Boats are numbered consecutively so that it is easy
to see their relative positions in each event To minimize overlapping
events at the finish each event is started 15 to 20 minutes apart
SPECTATORS the best place to watch the Regatta is at the finish line where the progress of each event on the river and the unofficial order of
finish will be announced by loudspeakers For spectators farther down
the course the river banks between Western Avenue and Boylston
Street provide good vantage points near the two mile mark After the
regatta race information will be broadcast over WCAS Radio 740 AM

NOTICE Each shell in this Regatta will be timed over the 21 / 3 mile Race course by two entirely separate timing systems Bulova split-second precision stop-watches
will record immediate times which will be unofficial and will be posted at Regatta
Headquarters Cambridge Boat Club after each Event photo-timer will simul taneously record the official times verifiable to 1 / 100th of second on film and such times will be announced to the public and press within 24 hours after the
finish of the Regatta The presentation of medals and trophies will await the
announcement of such official times
