The Annual Head of the Charles Regatta sponsored by the
Cambridge Boat Club is patterned after the many English
Head of The River races It makes use of tortuous course which not only puts the coxswains steering to test but allows
greater distances to challenge the oarsmens endurance Head races also allow many more boats to compete by eliminating the need for qualifying roces before the final event
Although
the
contestants
are
rowing
against
time spectators
are
witness
to
keen
competition
between
boats
The
running
starts
are
at
10
second
intervals
and
boats
are
numbered
consecutively
so
that
it is
easy
to see
their relative
positions
in
each
event
To minimize
overlapping
events at
the
finish
events are started 15 to 20 minutes apart Thus there is race on the course at all times during the afternoon
SPECTATORS .. the best place to watch the Regatta is at the finish line where the progress of each event on the river and the unofficial order of finish will be announced by loud
speakers For spectators farther down the course regatta information will be broadcast over WCAS Radio 740 AM
The program advertisers and friends of the regatta in Cambridge and the greater Boston community have made this Regatta possible
NOTICE Each shell in this Regattawill be timed over the mile Race Course by two entirely
separate timing systems Bulova split-second precision stop-watches will record immediate timeswhich will be unofficial and will be posted
at Regatta Headquarters Cambridge Boat Club after each Event photo-timer will simultane
ously record the official times verifyable to 1 / 100th of second on filmand such times will be announced to the public and press within 24
hours after the finish of the Regatta The presen tation of medals and trophies will await the announcement of such official times
