Mrs. Wisnesky: We are so excited to have built Mr. Potato Head and earned our first classroom award - Stuffed Animal Day! Our "Lost Tooth" graph is getting filled quickly. We are looking forward to learning about dental hygiene when Ms. Lou Ann from Hartford Dental visits first grade at the end of October. Our first Mystery Reader guest visits on Oct. 21. We have been learning strategies to help us when we read such as visualizing, predicting, and questioning. To help us tackle tricky words in our writing, we are learning to "Say It, Slide It, Hear It, Write It". In math we have been learning strategies to help us add and subtract. Have your child write an addition equation and ask them to point out the sum and an addend. SECOND GRADE Mrs. Gregoire: In Language Arts, the students are learning the elements of fiction. They have read and listened to many stories. Students have been working with partners and as a whole group during discussions. Different comprehension strategies have been taught. Visualization, retelling, and sequencing are currently being taught. In Writing, the students have been writing personal narrative stories. In Spelling, the students are working with letter patterns and syllables.In Math, the students are learning about Place Value to 1,000. They are writing the standard form, expanded form and written form of numbers. In Science/ Social Studies, they are learning about the changes in seasons and map skills. Mrs. Ziter: Students in Room 18 have been focusing on the following skills: Language Arts – We have read and listened to many stories. Students have been working with partners and as a whole group in discussions. They are learning different comprehension strategies. We are currently working on visualization, retelling, and sequencing. Writing- Students have been writing personal narrative stories. Spelling- We are learning about letter patterns and syllables. Math – Students are currently working on Place Value to 1,000. They are learning how to write number words, identify the value of digits, looking at number patterns, and writing numbers in expanded form. Science/Social Studies: We are learning about the changes in seasons, nocturnal animals, hibernation, migration, and some map skills. Mrs. Edelstein: Students in Room 19 are beginning the year by building a positive learning community. We have already filled our classroom bucket and have over 1,000 Dojo points! In reading we have worked on improving our reading habits by learning how to choose a book that is right for us and increase our reading stamina. Soon we will complete our character study in which we discuss the challenges characters face in fiction stories and their responses to those challenges. In writing we are writing personal narrative stories about our lives. These stories are about things we have done or things that have happened to us. In our next writing unit we will perform science experiments and write lab reports. In math we have focused on improving fact fluency. We have learned strategies to use to help us add and subtract. Our next unit is place value to 1,000. We will use a variety of strategies to help us understand number, show our work and be able to discuss our math thinking with others. Please continue to practice math facts and read nightly at home. Students have access to Xtra Math, Spelling City, RAZ Kids, and Core 5 at home to practice important skills that will help them be successful in school. Mrs. Rossetti: Room 20 has been very busy this year! We have almost filled our class bucket and we have over 1,000 Class Dojo points! In reading, we have worked on building our ready community and have begun working on retelling stories. We will also focus on studying the characters in the stories that we read. We have completed
