Mrs. Paolucci: Room 12 has begun an exciting year of First Grade. We are learning behavior expectations through our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies) program. These behaviors allow us to facilitate a positive learning environment and experience. Our ELA time closely follows The Daily Five model. Each student is working on strategies particular to their individual needs including building reading and writing stamina. Students Read to Self, Partner Read, Word Work and Spelling, Listen to Reading and Work on Writing. While the students are working on their particular strategies, staff is working with guided reading and writing groups at appropriate levels to strengthen their specific skills. Math workshops are practiced each day to develop fluency in addition and subtraction. Students work in groups with teachers and at centers with manipulatives and IPADS, to practice number identification, quantity discrimination and word problems. Being able to read each budding writer’s work as memories are recounted has allowed us all to share a piece of our past and find commonalities in our experiences. Writers have begun to work in partnerships providing one another with constructive feedback. Words were brought to life through word choice and attention to detail. Their writing has shown that it is not the big but the small moments that count! In mathematics, we are wrapping up our unit focused on addition and subtraction within 10. Developing your child’s fact fluency is much more than simple memorization. We’ve learned about flip-flop facts (commutative property), doubles, sums of ten, as well as a variety of tools and strategies we can use to solve them. Developing our fact fluency will be an ongoing focus throughout the school year. To practice at ho
