I am the USJ Literacy Intern. I started coursework on my master's degree back before I had kids, but I never found the right time to complete my degree, so I decided it was now or never. I live in South Windsor with my husband, two kids, and our dog and cat. My teaching background is probably somewhat atypical. Teaching was a career change for me. I was working as a paralegal at Aetna when I became involved in one of their corporate outreach programs called "Adopt-A-Class". Aetna volunteers would help out in a nearby elementary school classroom, and I loved the experience so much that I decided to go back to school at night to complete a postB.A. teacher certification program. I student taught in Manchester in a first grade classroom, and then I took a long-term sub position in Newington for a teacher out on maternity leave. After that, I started my own family and took several years off to be a stay-at-home mom. When I went back to work, I subbed in all grades from K6, in special education, and in all specials classrooms. I also worked as a reading tutor in East
