local life hawkesbury’s FINEST... by Lorraine Clifford There are only a couple of trading places in Richmond that have sold the same product since they opened decades ago. One is Richmond Newsagents and the other is Paull’s Richmond Mowers, both on bustling Windsor Street in the heart of Richmond. Richmond Newsagents has been part of the community for a long time and is about to close its doors. The last trading day is Sunday 11 June, the day before the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. Chris, with his mother, Helen. The shop and its owners will be sorely missed by Richmond residents. Peter McKenzie and his wife managed newsagents in Forbes before moving to Richmond, and Peter’s sister, Helen Rossi and her husband, Gary, moved down from the Central Coast to Richmond. They moved into the Richmond Newsagents’ premises in October 1989. Richmond Newsagents is very much a family affair. Peter and Helen work in the shop, along with Helen’s son, Chris, and Gary was in charge of deliveries. The shop’s owner currently has other plans for the property and Helen and Peter will be retiring. “We have loved being here, everyone is so friendly and we have made some lasting friendships,” says Helen when I caught up with her recently. “You really get to know people in a shop like this. Customers buy newspapers and Lotto but you get to know more about them when they ask for their hobby magazines or a particular milestone birthday card.” Customers were in and out the day I was there and all were wishing Helen and her family well and Helen made time to have a little chat with them all. One customer, Jim Tramby, was replenishing his card stock turtle nursery and LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES Kurmond Your Local Independent BP OPEN 24 HOURS EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR Full Convenience Store delicious Freshly • Decorative Gravels • Nepean River • Griffith Red • Cowra, White & Gold • Charcoal • Crushed Tile • Aussie Brown • Scoria Red & White • Blue Metal • Road Base • Sand 14 T ypes • Recycled Road Base • Recycled Aggregates • Bush Rock • Sandstone Flagging • Cements • Softfall (Play Ground) • Pine Bark • Coloured Wood Chip • Eucalyptus Mulch FIREWOOD Bags of kindling $15 • Turf Underlay • Hardwood Chip • Mushroom Compost • Softwood Chip • Treated Pine Sleepers • Leaf Mulch • Cypress Wood Chip • Top Soil • Organic Garden Mix • Premium Garden Mix • 80/20 Top Dressing • Organic Top Dressing • Filling Sand Cnr Windsor & Rouse Roads Rouse Hill Phone : 9629 2299 Cnr Racecourse & Blacktown Roads South Windsor Phone : 4574 3299 www.turtlenursery.com.au 6 ISSUE 85 // JUNE 2017 ed Roast Hot Chicken All materials available in small bags Specialising in 1 tonne Bulka-Bags DELIVERIES 7 DAYS OPEN 7 DAYS and buying papers and told me he had been using the newsagents for 30 years. “For many years I lived in Londonderry and used to deliver papers myself. Not that long ago we moved to North Richmond, and I still come here,” smiles Jim. In the days of short retail leases and pop up shops such customer loyalty is rare. Helen told me that Jim and his wife Nola would come into the shop around the same time every Monday morning, and Helen became good friends with their son’s family through them. I heard another customer wishing Helen good luck, and he recalled growing up in Richmond and the piles of newspapers were stacked so high on the shop floor they would ‘come right up to his knees!’ “In a funny way the shop has almost served as a catch up place for customers too. Many come in on the same day around the same time and have a good chat about what’s happening with them and their families,” Helen tells me. “It has been a happy place and there was always lots of talk and laughter.” The shop looked a perfect place to pull up outside and pop in for things other than newspapers and magazines. Card shelves were well stocked and there was a small range of stationery and school bag items. “The Richmond community have supported us since we moved in and we like to think we offer good customer FIREWOOD We have 20kg bags of firewood as well as 10kg bags of kindling.
