WINTERFEST SYDNEY MEDIEVAL FAIR 2017 At the Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair, you and your family can enter a medieval realm which brings the settings of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings to life! Explore all things medieval and historic at this popular family- friendly fair, which is held on the first weekend of the winter school holidays, 1-2 July, at the Hawkesbury Showground, Clarendon. Moving into its second decade, Winterfest is one of the longest-running annual medieval fairs in the Sydney metro region. This two-day event features an extensive program which will delight the whole family.You can immerse yourself amongst the action with a wonderful line- up of entertainment. Highlights of the program include: • The exciting Winterfest Jousting Tournament - see the face-off between champions in the sport of kings! • The Mounted Skill-at-Arms, demonstrating the skills required for knights in training and for battle. • Full Flight Birds of Prey show which will see graceful and powerful raptors soaring above and weaving through the crowd. There will also be educational talks about birds of prey in Australia and the history of falconry. • Melee Battles with knights in armour from a range of historical periods. Join the crowds at the 'battlefield' and watch the groups display their best in the 'Combat and Arms' display, which concludes with the 'Grand Melee'! • Take a stroll along the Re-enactors's row, where you can try helmets, armour, shields and weapons. There will be friendly re- THE hawkesbury INDEPENDENT www.hdinews.com.au enactors from the dark ages through to the 17th century and they will be happy to share their knowledge about the people and period they are re-enacting. • Complementing the entertainment program are hands-on activities including a traditional archery range, Celtic drumming workshops, and the chance to learn to use a rapier. Children meanwhile can practice their skills with (safe) swords and get creative by colouring-in medieval themed drawings and decorating swords and shields. Anyone can also meet and greet with the Winterfest unicorns, who love pats from the kids. You can also visit the 'The Village Green' with lots of educational and interactive displays and activities, and take a stroll through the 'Merchant's Row' and browse the vibrant range of stalls including quality artisan and handcrafted wares. Adding to the festival atmosphere will be roaming entertainers, including 'Feldergast the Fool' the wandering jester, face-painting for the children and a great selection of quality food vendors to choose from. The immersive festival environment extends to the Winterfest Costume and Cosplay competition. All event-goers are encouraged to wear something a bit different from the usual.
