SEAL OF APPROVAL

T rue icons of the kitchen don ’ t have sell by dates . And for a company dedicating to preserving , it ’ s reassuring that Kilner have 175 years of history behind their famous jars . Invented by John Kilner and Co in 1842 , each one is clear glass proof of how the best design is long lasting and much-loved .

In the 1900s , Kilner adverts proudly stated that they were “ the original and the best , all other brands are substitutes ,” a claim they can stand by today . The unique rubber pressure seal works as well now as it did back then , and cooks across the world trust it to preserve and pickle their fruit and vegetables . It was always the way . In 1863 , for example , the four Kilner Brothers ( who took over when their father John died in 1857 ) were awarded a medal for their glass bottles at the Great International Exhibition in London . No mean feat when you consider this was the very peak of the Victorian industrial age . By 1893 , the company was valued at around £ 305,000 – a staggering amount of money in that era – and its products were exported to countries all over the world , including Australia , The West Indies , South Africa , America and many more .
Sadly , this success was not to last in the 1900s . As a result of growing competition from larger glass-making businesses , and the increasing pressure to buy large , expensive machinery to compete in an age of mass production , the Kilner business dissolved . The design for the famous Kilner Jar was bought by another British business in 1937 – a conglomerate called United Glass Bottles .
Since then , the Kilner name and design has passed through the hands of various companies , before being taken up by The Rayware Group in the 2000s . Today , under these new owners , Kilner products have seen a real resurgence , and it ’ s safe to say that the brand has regained its former glory . It has warehouses in the US and in Asia ; exports to a variety of countries across the globe ; and is well-known everywhere for its long-established , good quality products .
In fact , Kilner has never been bigger . There ’ s been a surge in popularity for preserving home-grown fruit and veg and storing food in glass rather than plastic for health reasons . Seeing the Kilner name embossed in glass isn ’ t just a guarantee of quality , it ’ s a style statement for any kitchen .
It ’ s surprising how versatile Kilner ’ s high quality glass and that foolproof seal can be too . As well as holding juicy jams and delicious pickles , they can keep lunchtime salads fresh , dispense drinks , hold great looking cocktails , ferment food , cold brew coffee and really give you new opportunities in the kitchen . Here are just some of the things you can put inside ...
