Smeg
Harts Kitchen Icon
Italian Cool
Smeg have been giving us technology with
style for over 70 years, from their iconic
retro fridges to small appliances that turn
heads as well as mix, blend and toast
I
t all started with Elisabeth.
Not Smeg founder Vittorio
Bertazzoni Snr’s wife,
daughter or even mistress.
But the name of a gas cooker
that his company launched
in 1956 which was the first
of their iconic, upmarket line
of kitchen appliances. Before
that Smalterie Metallurgiche
Emiliane Guastalla (“Guastalla
Emilia Enamel Works”) had
specialised in enamelling and
metalwork since its formation
in post-war Italy in 1948. Right
from that first cooker with its
automatic switch-on function,
oven safety valve and cooking
programmer, Smeg set out
the philosophy that guides
them today: technology with
style. As company literature
states: “Style, for Smeg, is a
distinct concept: the way a
product communicates with
its surroundings and enables
users to interact with it.”
They have always believed
in creating appliances that
take centre stage “in the
heart of the home, a place
where people congregate.
The kitchen integrates
all of their functions and
becomes a perfect, fully-
equipped backdrop for those
precious and enjoyable
moments.”
