Beer is the most diverse drink on the planet with a wider range of tastes than wine or whisky so limiting yourself to one particular pint means missing out when you could be exploring new vistas of flavour . Or at least keeping the bar person on their toes .

Any journey in unfamiliar territory benefits from having a good guide . Amanda Edwards is the coowner of Gyle 59 with head brewer Jon Hosking , an artisan brewery from Dorset that pride themselves on making real beer , unfined and cloudy as nature intended to keep it full of flavour . They produce a range of nearly 20 beers that take in all the major styles and sometimes cross the boundaries to make interesting but very drinkable brews . As Amanda says : “ the craft beer movement is really all about subverting beer styles and mixing things up a bit . For example , you can find IPL beers ( India Pale Lager ) which is a hoppy , strong lager that borrows from IPA but hardly conforms to the low hops lagers that we are all familiar with .”
Also , don ’ t forget the largest part of any beer – water .“ This is the biggest ingredient at over 95 % of your beer . Soft or hard water and alkalinity will affect the resulting beer but it is complicated ”, she adds . Rejoice , for we are in a golden age of beer , says Amanda : “ The point is that brewers have at no time before had such an array of ingredients at their fingertips which is leading to some truly experimental beer styles which is very exciting . Think of the brewer as an artist with a vast array of colours in his palette , from which he can create a very colourful painting borrowing from other genres of popular culture such as music , street art and film .” It ’ s clear then that we all need to be bolder , try different styles and , basically , drink more good beer . Cheers to that .
