Gore-Barten for use in commercial
kitchens in 1945, Dualit’s toasters
are an enduring icon. Actually,
make that a near indestructible
icon – a recent competition to find
the oldest working Dualit was won
by a toaster of 1973 vintage!
Hand-built in the UK since the
1950s (you’ll find the assembler’s
personal mark on the base), their
replaceable parts mean a toaster
that will last a lifetime. Not that
their patented ProHeat elements
are going anywhere. Pretty much
armour-plated, they are virtually
unbreakable and make hotter toast
than the competition.
While admiring Dualit’s
distinctive, endearingly robust
appearance, don’t underestimate
how well this gleaming chrome
kitchen classic works. Instead
of sensors and fancy settings,
the simple mechanical timer
gives a reassuring count down
to breakfast time. Dualit are not
ones for undignified popping-up
first thing in the morning. The
simple lever instead lets you
raise your bread enough to see if
it’s been transformed into toast.
